Some Tips For Using and Preserving Swords
I'd like to share some tips that may be helpful when using and preserving swords.
1) When a SAYA will not move
To release the Saya when it is stuck, hold the Saya and the Tsuka tightly with your hands close to each other as the picture shows.

2) When the NAKAGO will not come out
When the Nakago is too tightly fit, place a cloth on the Saya for protectation, then place a piece of wood over the cloth, and lightly hit the wood with a wooden hammer.
* The Saya will be damaged if hitting too hard.

3) When a HABAKI will not come out
When the Habaki is too tightly fit to remove, it can be loosened by hitting it with a wooden hammer on the Nakago-Jiri (end of the tang).

4) When a SHIRASAYA gets a crack
When a Shirasaya cracks, use a cloth soaked in hot water and lightly pat the area where the crack is.
This will soften the SOKUI (glue made from rice) and re-glue the Shirasaya.
Do not use chemical glue for mending. It will cause rust on the blade.

5) When a SHIRASAYA gets a dent
To fix a small dent on a Shirasaya, wet the area where the dent is with a cloth soaked in hot water.
