How to Hold a Japanese Samurai Sword Properly

1. Lightly align the palm root depression with the tiger's mouth above the handle ridge.

2. Make sure the backs of your hands face out away from the sword on their respective sides. Keep a grip that’s firm enough so the katana doesn’t slip, but loose enough so you can easily maneuver around.  The front hand does not touch fuchi, and back hand does not touch kashira, and distance between two hands is 1 to 2 fingers wide, avoid rusting or wearing of metal fittings.

3. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart Check to see if the blade is naturally in line with arm. If your first three fingers exert too much force, the wrist will be bent by muscles traction and sword blade can not be in line with your arm.
